Drewry expects MPV rates to rise further in September due to tight vessel availability with inefficiencies in the container sector continuing to keep MPV ships busy as a significant proportion of vessels are being fixed well in advance. Vessel rates in the competing sectors – dry bulk and containers - continue to hover at record levels, which are expected to boost MPV rates. MPV is still a sellers’ market with owners free to quote their rates for any vessel that becomes open. Shortsea shipping demand is expected to pick up in 2H21, following a slowdown in July-August due to holidays. Increased iron ore and steel imports in Europe indicate strong manufacturing activities, which will aid demand for non-geared MPV ships. Meanwhile, the prompt availability of Project Carriers remains tight with high demand for container and wind-related cargo.
