In Drewry’s most recent Container Forecaster quarterly report published in end June, we had forecast that carriers would make record operating profits of approximately $80 billion in 2021, easily surpassing last year’s bumper $25 billion EBIT haul. If freight rates surpass our expectations, this figure could even swell to nearer $100 billion. With most major lines now having reported 2Q21 financials it would appear that even our most optimistic scenario will be too cautious and that a figure in excess of $100bn is very much on the cards.
