India's finance ministry's move to reduce the import duty on dredgers has forced Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to ask the three bidding companies to submit fresh tenders for the huge Mumbai channel dredging project. "According to the union budget of 2012-13, if a dredger's imported on a charter basis there will be 0% import duty but if it's purchased and imported, then countervailing duty will be applicable," an official told DPC. "The change will have a cost impact on dredging projects in the range of 8-25%," an executive with one of the bidding groups said. And JNPT chairman Luxman Radhakrishnan said: "Because of the changes in duty, there will be a change in the bids. We expect a lower amount to be bid.
