Despite diesel expected to cost only about USD2/US gallon throughout 2016, converting diesel cutter dredgers and booster pumps to electric power can still result in energy savings, according to Charles Johnson, domestic sales director of US company DSC Dredge. Apart from those savings, he says, a contractor can typically achieve up to a 7% increase in output, while reducing dredger downtime. Converting to electricity will promote sustainability and, in many countries, will add LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points for energy-efficient projects. A research report by Johnson spelled out the figures behind that conclusion. The first step, it noted, is to understand how diesel engine requirements, typically quoted in horsepower (hp), relate to the electric motor kilowatt (kW) requirements.
