MAX NEUHAUS MUSICA MIRA

It is the sound of the world that Max Neuhaus heard and distilled for us. Not unlike Ariel on his enchanted island, he made the wind into a sweet melody which captivated some of us for nearly half a century. He made his meteoric rise as a solo percussionist in the Sixties, as he performed John Cage and Morton Feldman who wrote scores specifically for him. Max Neuhaus performed the first public concert of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Zyklus in New York. He was the only one who could read scores written by contemporary composers in what seemed to the rest of us like hieroglyphics. Only then, inspired by Edgard Varese and John Cage, he abandoned the concert stage in favour of the sound of the world.
