In a note to managers and assistants dated 2 October 1986, the Vitra CEO Rolf Fehlbaum summed up the meaning and aims of the showroom display on the first floor of the building designed by Nicholas Grimshaw in 1981. As well as displaying the company's products, which mainly focused on office furnishings at the time, the space also contained aspecial platform displaying more than 100 famous chairs exemplifying 20th-century industrial production.
