FULVIO IRACE: BACK TO SQUARE ONE FOR ARCHITECTURE,ONCE AGAIN. THE DEFEAT OF THE DESIGN PROJECT AND DRAWING-ROOM EUROPEANISM

In November 1934, Domus published a surprise article by Edoar do Persico, editor of its rival Casabella, with a title that had the gravity of an epigraph and the clarity of a blunt diagnosis: "Pun to e da capo per l'architettura" (Architecture goes back to square one). Written at Gio Ponti's request — "Dear Persico, may I commis sion you to write a crucial article for Domus: 'Necessita di un riesame'?" (Reappraisal needed) - the fervent essay develops a scathing 1933 diagnosis to extreme consequences. Itreads: "For us, Italian Rationalism is dead. Born out of a contrived need for something new, or as an imported imitation, it has never been of interest, except to testify to a spiritual unease that failed to coherently establish the terms of its problem."
