The weighty monograph published for the exhibition at the Mart in Rovereto (25 September-23January 2011) is a clarification of several issues regarding Mario Botta, an architect from the Swiss canton of Ticino. First of all the book deals with the question of inspiration, presenting 42 items that, in Botta's words, "have emotively influenced my imagination and conditioned my outlook on the world. They are the elective affinities and cultural debts for which I harbour a great sense of gratitude." The sequence of references spans the full range of the visual arts. Carlo Bertelli's essay "Past and Present" introduces this firstsection by explaining how the anthology steps back in time and belongs to a generation that experienced the end of the industrial era and rational architecture.%La poderosa monografia, che accompagna la mostra allestita dal 25 settembre al 23 gennaio al Mart di Rovereto, mette definitivamente in chiaro alcune questioni che riguardano l'architetto ticinese. La prima è quella dell'eredità: il libro si apre con una sezione dedicata a quarantadue incontri, "che più di altri hanno colpito il mio immaginario sotto forma di emozioni e che hanno condizionato il mio sguardo verso il mondo. Sono affinità elettive e debiti culturali verso i quali nutro un forte sentimento di gratitudine". Introdotta da un testo di Carlo Bertelli - II passato presente- che ricorda come questa antologia vada indietro nel tempo e appartenga alla generazione che viveva lo scadere dell'età industriale e dell'architettura razionale, la sequenza di riferimenti insegue una visione integrale delle arti visive.
