The defining feature of the architectural concept for the New Monte Rosa Hut is its splendid isolation amid a dramatic and sometimes violent Alpine landscape, in an extreme climatic location far removed from convenient and civilised supply networks, yet nevertheless the product of an exceptionally urbane culture. The new hut therefore had to be as autonomous as possible - the target was 90 per cent self-sufficiency - with its own independent energy supply. These requirements directly influenced the planning and manufacturing of the building, site logistics, construction, infrastructure, supply, waste disposal and the operation of the hut.
