THE PRADO AND THE REINA SOFIA

The Prado Museum is the most important art gallery in Madrid. The original building was by Juan de Villanueva, who designed it as a science collection. This is the realm of Velazquez and Goya, but make sure not to miss Durer's recently-restored Adam and Eve panels. They are marvellous. The new extension is by Rafael Moneo. According to the American art historian Jonathan Brown, the Prado Museum is the world's best museum of European painting. The Reina Sofia is Madrid's contemporary art museum.
