Giuseppe Penone's recent installation at the Versailles Palace allows us to finally discover the enchantment of its original splendour without even entering the Hall of Mirrors-a temptation that other contemporary artists (Murakami, Koons and Vasconcelos) who have shown here in recent years have not been able to resist. In a state of grace, he brushes lightly against the building with a perfumed room, where the shadow of the delicate bronzes can be "breathed", eliminating any false site-specific connection to this sublime location. Versailles, it has to be said, is self-sufficient, highly charged with a specific culture and nature that are difficult to preserve, let alone domesticate with the silly seasons of contemporary art.
