At 1:05am on 27 May 1993, a car bomb exploded in Via dei Georgofili, outside the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Around midnight on 27 July of the same year, two car bombs, in quick succession, exploded next to the Basilica of St. John Lateran and in front of the Church of St. George in Velabro, Rome. These were followed by a third blast, in Via Palestro, Milan, near the Padiglione d Arte Contemporanea (pac) and the Gallery of Modern Art. Carried out by the same syndicate and resulting from a sole criminal design, these bombings were attributed by judicial truth to the Sicilian mafia. Connected to other episodes, such as the spectacular murders of the magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino and the failed attack on the Olympic Stadium in Rome, they are viewed by public opinion as an attempt to force the State into a negotiation of coexistence with criminal organisations. But in their murkier aspects, they are also seen as acts of terrorism calculated to influence the institutional establishment and the Cold War.
