Before World War Ⅱ and until middle school, I lived in Milan in a gorgeous bourgeois house at 15, Via Giorgio Jan. It had been built in 1930 by my grandfather, a builder from Le Marche, and I was born there in 1931. The house was designed by Piero Portaluppi. My grandfather gave each of his children an apartment there, keeping the largest storey for himself. My uncle Antonio Boschi lived there too. He was an engineer with Pirelli and an enthusiastic collector of modern art. Over time, his collection became huge, almost 1,800 pieces, and toward the end of his life, he donated it to the City of Milan. My ex-wife, my two daughters and my brother still live in the house, but the second floor has become a museum. When the war broke out, we all fled to Salò - in other words, the worst place. I returned to Milan from Verona when I was 17 to go to university. I went to live with my grandmother, aunts and uncles inside this collection.
