The mine was built under the Fascist regime in 1936 and decommissioned in 1964. In addition to 2 deep shafts descending 310 metres below sea level, the compound features several buildings renovated in the early 2000s. The new building, due for completion by the end of the year, replaces a warehouse at the entrance. Symmetrical to the adjacent rationalist building where the management was located, the storage constituted the main axis of the layout and defined the edges of the square overlooked by the entrances to the mine enclosure. The project aims to preserve the testimony of this building by keeping its perimeter walls and opening the original arches. The walls define the enclosure that contains new spaces, the configuration of which derives from the original layout that, however, was rationalised: the sequence of workshops is found alongside the isolated space of a showroom with open passages, intended to host cultural events.
