Reinventing the waterfront

In recent decades, Oslo - the capital of Norway and its buoyant oil economy - has been reinventing itself along the two major trajectories of gentrification and large-scale urban redevelopment projects, with immigration as a sizzling undercurrent adding impetus, diversity and new challenges to the sphere of prudent social-democratic urbanism. The Bjorvika area, comprising the new upmarket CBD of Barcode, incorporates all of these directions of development, as well as a range of culture-oriented urban regeneration strategies.
