The increasing emphasis on airports as intermodal hubs is in response both to the evolution of the market and to growing social and political sensitivity to environmental issues and questions of territorial cohesion. The unprecedented air transport crisis due to the pandemic and the ensuing restrictions on mobility have only boosted thinking in this direction, quite frequently strengthening larger airports serving mixed business and leisure travel demand and mealcening mid-sized airports (2-10 million passengers), which tend to be more dependent on the business segment.
