摘要

That the acclaimed Japanese film director Hirokazu Kore-eda (born in 1962) originally studied literature and planned to become a novelist is perhaps not surprising. His distinctively precise observations of the intricate details of human behaviour and interactions - often inspired by personal experience - are qualities one might associate with a more introverted art form like literature. After graduating in 1987 he first embarked on a career in television, assisting with documentaries until directing one of his own, Lessons from a Calf, in 1991. Kore-eda has always been acutely aware of his presence as the director and storyteller: "I think the idea that you can eliminate your subjectivity and so achieve a kind of objectivity or impartiality is a myth, a fantasy." In this sense, the transition to the creation of his first fiction feature film Maborosi in 1995 was not a great leap but bound up with an even greater sense of social responsibility, "since the writer or filmmaker's own world view comes into question" more clearly.
