New Anaerobic Digester Planned in U.K.

Biffa, a leading waste management business in the United Kingdom, is planning an 80,000-tonne-per-year anaerobic digestion facility at Cannock in the West Midlands. The facility will generate 4 MW of electrical energy, enough power for 4,000 homes, and have the potential to make available 2 MW of thermal energy for a district heating system as well as creating high-quality fertilizer for land restoration. The project is is expected to create up to 50 jobs and will divert 2 million tonnes of waste from landfill over its estimated 25-year operational life. Combined with its landfill gas operations, Biffa now has an installed capacity for the generation of 12 MW per year. The new facility is expected to become operational in early 2011.
