U.Va. Task Force Implements Energy Savings

The University of Virginia (U.Va.) facilities management department has assembled a team of experts in various building operations fields to re-examine energy use and efficiency in existing buildings and retrocommission older structures to increase their sustainability. Dubbed 'Delta Force' for delta T, the team targeted Medical Research Building 4 (MR4) as its first project. Known as an 'energy hog,' the 194,000-sq-ft, 25-year-old building underwent a variety of improvements costing $82,000. Old pipes as well as heating and cooling system control valves were replaced. As a result, nine months later, chilled-water usage was down by 40 percent and heating energy usage down by 14 percent. At 2008-2009 rates, these changes translate to $388,000 in savings.
