University of Iowa System to Tap Methane From Landfill

The Gazette of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, reported Feb. 28 on a project that will enable the University of Iowa (Ul) to power its research campus using methane gas from the 180-acre Iowa City landfill. The city will pump methane through a 6-mile- long pipeline to the Ul Research Park. The Ul, which will pay the city for the gas, will use it to cogenerate electricity and heat for the campus.
