Scientists at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom have published papers claiming that using sustainable wood and other biofuels could hold the key to lowering greenhouse gases in the U.K. and that building district heating systems to provide heat and hot water for communities would not only drastically reduce greenhouse gases but also do so cost-effectively. Prepared by the university's Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, the reports state that using wood in U.K. power stations could reduce greenhouse gases by more than 84 percent, with even higher reductions of 94 percent possible for district heating systems. Focus groups to test the U.K. public's eagerness for district heating showed the majority of people in favor of such systems.
