Cogeneration: Foundation of Europe's 2050 Energy Policy

COGEN Europe has released a study showing that cogeneration is fundamental to any scenario leading to a decarbonized energy sector for Europe. A key part of the European Union's energy efficiency strategy, cogeneration is supported by the EU's Cogeneration Directive 2004/08/EC. It is already saving Europe a minimum of 35 million tonnes of oil (Mtoe) equivalent a year while providing 11 percent of its electricity and heat. With a suitable policy framework, cogeneration is projected to play a fundamental role through 2030 and provide ongoing efficiency and sus-tainability advantages as the energy mix changes to lower-carbon sources by 2050.
