UNC Lowers Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill announced in October that its greenhouse gas emissions were 20 percent lower in 2009 than the previous year - marking the first time UNC had reduced emissions since its 2007 pledge to achieve climate neutrality by mid-century. The turnaround was achieved through a combination of internal efficiency programs and external market influences. The campus is served by cogeneration and chilled-water cooling systems that have played a key role in UNC's carbon abatement efforts. According to Daniel Arneman, Ph.D., the UNC greenhouse gas specialist who prepared the university's 2009 greenhouse gas inventory, the reduction puts UNC slightly ahead of schedule to achieve its 2050 goal.
