District Heating Without Fossil Fuels, Biomass or Nuclear Power

That's right: None of the energy sources we most commonly think about today will provide heat for future district heating systems. Impossible, you say? Researchers in Denmark are hard at work imagining a future for district heating without conventional energy sources. This research is in response to the country's decision to be powered with 100 percent renewables by 2050. The answer may lie in making district heating work with lower temperatures and, of course, in reducing the amount of heat used through better building practices and conservation.
