Keyboards and keypads have a long history as data input methods, but they are by no means the most effective or convenient way to bring data into a system. This has become increasingly apparent with the rise of portable and handheld electronics, where the increasingly compact designs often result in buttons that are too close to each other for comfortable use. Touch panels, a familiar presence in automatic teller machines, building directories and other public-use terminals, offer a way around this obstacle in much smaller sets as well.
