摘要

In keeping with the spirit of the Routledge Philosophers series, Smith’s volume on Hus-nserl is written with a wide audience in mind – fi rst-time readers of Husserl’s work as well nas those more experienced with the writings of the proclaimed father of phenomenology. nSmith’s analysis illustrates Husserl’s impact on both the continental and the analytic ntraditions, a system that is as much a science as a theoretical study, and the picture that nemerges is one of phenomenology as a core discipline of philosophy because it is an in-ntegration of logic, ontology, epistemology, metaphysics, ethical theory, and speech act ntheory. Accordingly, Husserl should be ranked among the great systematic thinkers such nas Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, and Kant, in that carving out his own niche has nmeant including the historically important ideas of these masters as much as creating his nown unique solutions to the problems left unsolved by each. Smith’s narrative describes nHusserl’s system as present in every piece of written work, a perfect practical illustration nof his theory of parts and wholes, according to which each part of the whole depends on nevery other part, so regardless of whether the theme of a specifi c work is mathematics or nontology or ethics, each theme “reignites the image of his whole system, inviting the nreader to look more closely into other parts of the system” (pp. 7). Hence, Smith charac-nterizes Husserl’s thought as holographic, and since the whole philosophical system is nrefl ected in each theme, he argues that the only way to present Husserl’s systematic nstructure is to proceed thematically and refl ect the interconnections among the themes
