EPA targets PFAS in industrial wastewater

The US EPA announced this month that it plans to regulate the levels of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in industrial wastewater streams. The agency has initially proposed revising federal effluent limits for facilities that manufacture or formulate PFAS chemicals - owned by the likes of 3M and Chemours - as well as metal finishing plants. In a preliminary study of PFAS in industrial wastewater, the EPA found that approximately half of the 1,339 chromium electroplating facilities in the US employ practices that could generate wastewater containing PFAS.
