Karachi to tackle supply with World Bank-backed water PPP

The city of Karachi in Pakistan is looking to overcome a legacy of failed water PPP projects in the country, with the launch this month of a tendering process for a privately financed potable water supply pipeline. Karachi is Pakistan's largest city - and the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the world - with a population of more than 15 million and a water demand of 1,2ooMIGD (5.5 million m~3/d). It is also one of the world's most water-stressed cities: it currently receives a regular supply of just 665MIGD (3 million m~3/d), more than 30% of which is unfiltered, while water loss levels above 35% reduce the availability figure further.
