Since 2000, when it convened a Task Force on Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics has been forward-looking in its vision of the relationships between allopathic physicians and practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine.1 In 2005, the American Academy of Pediatrics accepted an application to create a Section on Complementary and Integrative Medicine. Kathy Kemper, a staunch advocate of integrative medicine (and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine [JEBCAM]), subsequently has served as Chair of the Executive Committee of that Section (http://www.aap.org/sections/chim). In 2010, Kemper completed the onerous task of authoring a manual guiding the use of holistic care for achieving optimum mental and physical health.2 Publication of her book by the American Academy of Pediatrics puts the imprimatur of this prestigious organization on the critical importance of aligning orthodox medical care with those scientifically based complementary and alternative medicine therapies.
