Are farmers more likely to develop skin cancer? AUTHORS

Farmers are thought to have a higher risk of skin cancers, but thereis no direct evidence of this risk , and some population evidenceof no greater risk to farmers of melanoma . The agricultural regionof the Darling Downs in Queensland, Australia, has the highestincidence of skin cancer in the state . Here, we define the specificoccupation risk for skin cancer among Darling Downs farmerscompared to other community residents, from clinical findings.Using a retrospective electronic clinical record audit in sevenpractices on the Darling Downs, data were extracted for cases andcontrols, noting recorded occupation of farming. Those withoutrecorded occupation or ‘retired’ were categorised as non-farmers.
