The burden and location of [diffuse axonal injury (DAI)]lesions has been used as a prognostication tool.45 One experimental imaging technique in the evaluation of DAI burdenpost-[traumatic brain injury] is ultra–high-field (UHF) [susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI)] MRI, in contrast to the1.5T or 3.0T MRI commonly used clinically. Work done byMoen et al. has demonstrated that UHF SWI MRI reveals anaverage of 41% more traumatic microbleeds caused by DAIthan does 3T SWI, and these lesions appear larger on UHFSWI MRI.
