Efficacy and safety of blood purification in the treatment of deep burns

Severe burnscan occuratany timein day-to-day life. Theirchances of occurrenceincrease with the development ofindustrialand economic systems owing to natural or man-madeaccidents inwork and homeenvironments. [1] An effective method oftreating burns is desperately needed to reducetheincidences ofrelated mortality and complications. Thereisconsiderableevidencethatsepsis in severely burned patients isassociated with an inflammatory state. Thus,a non-selectiveapproach viaextracorporeal blood purification isan attractivetreatment option untilthe pathophysiology oftheinflammatory responserelated to burns is morefully understood. [2] It has been reported thatearly interventionwith blood purification reduces theincidence ofsepsis, septicshock,and organ failurein patients with burns ≥ 50%total body surfaceareaand improves the survival of patients with burns ≥ 80%total body surfacearea. [3] Blood purification includes hemofiltration and plasmapheresis.
