Early detection of lung cancer in Czech high-risk asymptomatic individuals (ELEGANCE)

Theannualincidencerate oflung cancer in the CzechRepublicis high, 86 and 43 cases per 100,000 men and women a year, respectively. [1] With morethan half ofthecases diagnosed in stageIV, therelative 5-year survivalis only 10%making it the mostcommon cause of death among oncological diagnoses. Cigarettesmoking isa well-documented cause oflung cancerand about 90%oflung cancersare directly caused by smoking. Therelationship between the number ofcigarettes smoked per day, the depth ofinhalation, theage ofthesmoker,and the development oflung cancer have been documented.
