High performance grinding of titanium alloys with electroplated diamond wheels

This paper is concerned with an experimental study on grinding titanium alloys using electroplated diamond wheels with focus on wheel wear and its effects on forces, power, and surface roughness. Straight surface grinding experiments were conducted to measure forces, power, surface roughness, and wheel wear. Specific energy values ranging from about 19 to 43 J/mm3and G-ratios from about 296 and 944 were obtained. It was found that a higher material removal rate results in a lower G-ratio and electroplated diamond wheels wear less than electroplated CBN wheels on titanium alloys under other identical conditions.
