CHART OF THE MONTH: GROWTH IN HOUSEHOLD WATER AND SEWER CONNECTIONS

Just one in five developing countries has a shot at reaching SDG 6.1 on universal water access by 2030, GWI WaterData estimates. On the sanitation side, that drops to just one in eight, even when accounting for the rapid growth of non-sewered sanitation solutions. India's historic Jal Jeevan Mission stands out among 30 key developing markets in the chart below, in stark contrast to its neighbours. Brazil's concessions programme also looks transformational, with contracts front-loading capital investment into water and sewer networks. Other star performers include Colombia, with fresh funding announced in the middle of the pandemic, and Senegal, with its ambitious government backed by donors and complemented by strong private operators. Much of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia will not be following the likes of Tunisia or Mexico down the universal sewered connection route. Senegal's low sewer numbers mask its impressive development on the non-sewered side, where it has secured a reputation as a pioneer. Despite pockets of success, the investment gap remains vast. Annual spending in emerging markets needs to average $350 billion a year for the rest of the decade to meet targets - almost triple what it is today.
