Antibacterial effects of Musa sp. ethanolic leaf extracts against methicillin-resistant and susceptible Staphylococcus aureus

Plant extracts have been widely used to treat bacterial-related diseases due to the presence of phytochemical compounds in the extracts. Banana plants have antimicrobial, antiulcerogenic and antioxidant properties and have been reported to exhibit antibacterial activity against some of the pathogens causing nosocomial infections. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of 80% ethanolic leaf extracts ofMusa paradisiaca, Musa acuminataandMusa sapientumagainst methicillin-resistant and susceptibleStaphylococcus aureus(MRSA and MSSA). The ethanolic leave extracts was obtained by soxhlet extraction and concentrated using a rotary evaporator before subjecting it to the agar well diffusion assay. Based on the diameter of the zones of inhibition, the ethanolic extracts ofM. paradisiacaandM. acuminataat the concentration of 2.86?g/mL and 3.33?g/mL respectively, exhibited similar inhibitory effect (p?≤?0.05) against the tested bacteria when compared with the positive control, clindamycin. This is most likely due to the presence of phytochemicals such as alkaloids and tannins that inhibited the bacterial growth. No zone of inhibition was detected with the extract ofM. sapientum. These findings strongly suggest that the ethanolic leave extracts ofMusa paradisiacaandMusa acuminatacan be further investigated as effective antibacterial agents against MSSA and MRSA.
