Army backs modernization priorities in FY-22 request despite budget hit

The Army has managed to protect its top modernization programs despite taking a hit in its fiscal year 2022 budget request, according to budget documents released last week. The service's budget request for FY-22 is $173 billion, a decrease of $5 billion from what the service requested last year and $3.6 billion from what was enacted in FY-21. The base budget in the request amounts to $154.5 billion, an increase of $1.4 billion from last year. The Overseas Contingency Operations budget in the FY-22 request has been eliminated and instead is referred to as direct war and enduring costs and is included within the base budget, Maj. Gen. Paul Chamberlain, director of Army budget, told reporters during a May 28 briefing. Direct war and enduring funding amounts to $18.4 billion in the budget request.
