InDecember 2019, a cluster of pneumonia cases was reported in China, which eventuallyled to the identi cation of the rst case of COVID-19. Since then, COVID-19 hasspread across Asia to Europe and through to theUSA before the rst case was reportedin Egypt on February 14.1 Daily updates from the Africa Centres for Disease Control(Africa CDC) show that the number of recorded cases has risen daily with (as of June18, 2020) 52 African UnionMember States reporting 267,519 cases, 7197 deaths, and122,661 recoveries.2 Together with Egypt and Algeria, South Africa was considered tobe at the highest risk of the virus being imported and spreadingwith amoderate to highcapacity to respond to an outbreak.
