Perception of the Public on the Common Zoonotic Diseases and Attitude to One Health Approach in Shalla District, Oromiya, Ethiopia
A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was performed on 404 purposively selected studyparticipants from November 2019 to April 2020 for evaluating the community`s perception towards commonzoonotic diseases and their attitude to One Health approach in Shalla district, West Arsi Zone, Ethiopia.Farmers, students, butchers, medical professionals and veterinarians were included in the survey. Out of studyrespondents 92.07% (372/404) were heard about zoonosis. Diseases mentioned includes rabies (80.9%), anthrax(48.5%), taeniasis (37.1%), bovine tuberculosis (26.2%), Ebola virus (25.2%), brucellosis (21.02%) andechinococcosis (20.04%). 92.8% and 24.35% of respondents aware the transmission of the disease from animalto human and human to animal, respectively. Modes of transmissions mentioned includes, dog bite (89.1%),ingestion (70.5%), inhalation (38.6%), contact (26.2%) and vector born (17.8%). 80.7% and 19.3% of participantshad a positive and negative attitude on the One Health approach, respectively. The Statistically insignificantdifference in the level of awareness about One Health approach in age classifications (p = 0.232) was recorded.However, statistically significant difference (p0.05) in sex (p = 0.013), education level (p = 0.001) and profession(p = 0.001) were recorded. Education through awareness creation and integration via one health approachshould be undertaken in order to improve the recent low level of public awareness about zoonotic diseases.
