Effect of Nitrogen Fertilizer Rates on Phenology, Growth,Yield and Economic Feasibility Teff (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter)Varieties in Abbay Chommen District, Western Ethiopia
Teff is a highly valued crop in the national diet of Ethiopians but its productivity is low due to soilfertility depletion and lack of improved variety by smallholder farmers in the area. This in view a field experimentwas carried out during the 2019/2020 cropping season on farmers field in Abbay Chommen district with theobjective to determine the effects of nitrogen fertilizer rates and varieties on phenology, growth, yield andeconomic feasibilities of teff production. The treatments consisted of four levels of nitrogen (18, 36, 50 and 66kg N ha ) and three varieties (Guduru, Gimbichu and Tseday). The experiment was laid out as a randomized 1complete block design in factorial arrangement with three replications. Main effect of N fertilizer ratesignificantly affected mean days of panicle emergence, days to maturity and plant height of teff. Mean plantheight of teff was highly significant (p0.01) affected by main effects varieties. The days 50 % panicleemergence and physiological maturity were delayed as the rate of nitrogen fertilizer was increased. Increasingnitrogen level beyond 50kg ha was increasing both phonological and growth of teff. Higher net benefit EB 165746 ha with marginal rate of return of 525% and value to cost ratio EB 7.6 per unit of investment was 1obtained with application of 50 kg N ha fertilizer rate. Gimbichu and Guduru varieties of teff had responded 1to nitrogen rate as compared to Tseday variety in Abbay Chommen condition. Therefore, application of 50 kgN ha gave higher grain yield and economic benefit and recommended for teff production in Abbay Chommen 1district and similar agroecologies.
