According to the characteristics of the gap voltage and current in actual processing, a new real-time gap state discrimination method for High Speed WEDM (HSWEDM) with a Buck-type pulse power generator is proposed. The gap states of open circuit, normal discharge, and short circuit can be identified in each discharge cycle. The harmful pulses can be handled pulse by pulse. Finally, the experimental results show that the gap state discrimination method can correctly identify the gap state for various discharge current and pulse width ratio, and guide the servo tracking system to achieve good tracking effect and continuous stable processing.
