Several studies have focused on the role of provider handoffs as an important consideration in patientsafety. However, the number of studies focused on thehandoff transition of patients from the cardiothoracicoperating room (OR) to the intensive care unit (ICU) hasbeen limited. As clinicians with a dedicated interest inthe perioperative care of cardiothoracic surgery patients,we performed a systematic review of the literature toanalyze whether a structured handoff process from theOR to the ICU is beneficial for cardiothoracic surgerypatients.
