Microbes are everywhere in the Earth's biosphere—they play crucial roles in agriculture,nutrient cycling,environmental protection,and animal and human health.However,despite the importance of microbes throughout human history,their roles remain to be fully recognized.In China,one of the key scientists who led to the recognition and utilization of microbes was Dr.Fan Qingsheng(樊庆笙博士,Fig.1).
