Umbilical Cord Blood Collection, Storage, and Use: A Brazilian Experience

Since the regulation of umbilical cord blood banks (UCBB) in theU.S. and Europe in the early 1990s, approximately 700,000 unitsof umbilical cord blood (UCB) have been voluntarily donated afterconsent of healthy parturients, processed, and cryopreserved forlong-term storage in more than 100 public banks worldwide. Consolidatedclinical experience shows that the success of hematopoieticstem cell (HSC) UCB transplantation, as well as of bonemarrow transplantation, is dependent on the number of cells collected.This raised challenges for UCBBs: the high cost of collection,processing, and storage, and a low number of transplants.
