According to NetCord FACT Standards, cord blood banks have todetermine the potency of cord blood units (CBUs) on a representativesample of the cryopreserved product before release to a transplantcenter. In the Héma-Québec Stem Cells Laboratory, potency ofautologous peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) is also tested beforetransplantation of the product. Currently, we evaluate potency byusing the so-called colony-forming unit (CFU) assay, which takes14 days. This important delay can be of concern for urgent medicaldecisions and may not serve the patient’s best interests.
