Barriers to Cord Blood Banking: Perspectives of Midwives and Cord Collectors

The NHS Cord Blood Bank is a large, publicly funded cord bloodbank. Although an inventory has been built up of high qualityand diverse units, barriers to cord blood donation at our collectionsites have impeded our banking rates. To understand thebarriers and ascertain whether changes could be made in ouroperations to overcome them, a qualitative study was undertakenwith the cord blood collectors and midwives at our collectionsites. Themes emerged, which led to adjustments in theinformation provided to address some of the barriers.
