Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period are phasescommonly associated with joy and hope. Even though it maybe an unplanned event for many women, pregnancy usuallydevelops without complications most of the times: motherand newborn child start together—and well—a new phase oftheir lives. This does not mean that the good outcome wasachieved without a significant number of women experiencingdiscomfort, stress, anxiety, fear, or even some sadness. These are conditions that, although not desirable, tend to bepresent during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartumperiod. However, for some women, this is a period of greatanguish, suffering, and risk. Risk of intimate partner violence, ofmistreatment in health facilities, of developing physical orpsychological sequelae, and risk of dying.
