In 1928, CIAM’s La Sarraz Declaration highlighted the most efficientmethod of production as rationalization and standardisation by actingdirectly on working methods both in modern architecture, the groundconception; and in the building industry, the realization of ideals. Twoyears before that, Ernst May, the head of department of settlements forthe city of Frankfurt from 1925 to 1930, asked Margarette Schütte-Lihotzkyto design the kitchen of approximately 15,000 residential blocks andterraced houses by promoting modular system as a new technology, whichpermitted mass production with lowered costs. Frankfurt Kitchen wasbuilt in 1926 as part of this comprehensive residential programme; filteredwith socialist views of Lihotzky and followed a design strategy based onmodularity.
