The aim of the study was to evaluate callus induction and phenolic compound production of Digitalis purpurea L.(foxglove) callus extracts derived from leaves and formed in MS medium supplemented with different NaCl concentrations.NaCl decreased callus induction and callus fresh weight at all concentrations. The highest total phenolic compound contents were recorded from callus grown in mediums with 75 and 100 mM NaCl supplements, compared with the callus induced in the medium containing only MS.Among the six phe-nolics found in the callus samples, catechin, caffeic acid and apigenin were the major constituents. The amount of catechin increased significantly in callus grown in 100 mM NaCl medium by nearly 10-fold and the amount of caffeic acid and apigenine increased significantly in callus grown in 125 mM NaCl medium by nearly 7 and 20-folds (respectively) compared with the control group.Major volatiles in foxglove calli were represented by cro-tonaldehyde,3-methylbutanal,2-methylbutanal,ethanol,furfural,n-hexane,limonene and dimethyl sulfide.
