We report two cases of malaria diagnosed in Rhode Island.First, a 21-year-old female who presented with 5days of fevers, chills, headache, and myalgias after returningfrom a trip to Liberia, found to have uncomplicatedmalaria due to P. ovale which was treated successfullywith atovaquone/proguanil and primaquine. Second, achronically ill 55-year-old male presented with 3 days ofheadache followed by altered mental status, fever, andnew-onset seizures after a recent visit to Sierra Leone,found to have P. falciparum malaria requiring ICU admissionand IV artesunate treatment. The diagnosis andmanagement of malaria in the United States (US), aswell as its rare association with subdural hemorrhage aresubsequently reviewed.
